METHAMPHETAMINE

Methamphetamine is a stimulant drug which is easily manufactured in simple laboratories which have been found in settings ranging from small moving trailers to multi-million dollar homes in nearly every state in the nation. In the past few years, the meth epidemic has spread from the southwestern United States to its recent appearance on the east coast. The affects of methamphetamine are similar to those of cocaine, but the drug is much less expensive. Its effects on individuals and families, however, is devastating.

Per 2003 admission data, Utah County sees more meth abusers in treatment than any other county in Utah with the exception of Salt Lake. Utah County’s Division of Substance Abuse reported over 800 treatment admissions compared to Salt Lake County's report of over 2000 meth treatment admissions. Utah County’s meth treatment admissions exploded with nearly a 5000% increase in the last 10 years. However, only about 40 percent of those needing treatment are able to receive it. By comparison, county treatment admission rates for most other substances are staying about the same or declining.

Drug abuse is mainly a male oriented problem, but with methamphetamine abuse and addiction the opposite is true. More women’s lives are devastated by meth than men’s. Unfortunately, this means that children are adversely affected as well. Children of meth abusing women often show signs of neglect: poor appetite, poor nutrition, poor grooming and hygiene, fatigue, mood swings, poor academic performance, and behavior problems in the community and the classroom. Teachers and day care providers may also notice the scent of cooked methamphetamine on children’s clothes or hair. Utah County’s methamphetamine treatment population is 54% women. The vast majority of women in Utah County’s drug court programs are there for problems with meth.

METH IS A TOP DRUG PROBLEM...
Meth is top drug problem, survey says

According to a crime survey of 45 states, Methamphetamine has overtaken cocaine as the biggest drug problem in rural and small towns in the US. More than half of the 500 county law enforcement polled said the highly addictive substance was their biggest drug problem. Methamphetamine is a chemical variant of amphetamine with much more powerful effects. It is easy to produce using chemicals found on farms, and the homemade labs which produce it are less easy to detect in the countryside reports BBCThe ingredients are highly toxic and highly flammable, often resulting in serious explosions. And the drug itself, which is smoked, inhaled or injected, is extremely addictive, producing a high that lasts several hours and leading to binges that often last days or even weeks.

The problem started in the northwestern US, but it is moving east - and it is now having a "devastating" effect on communities nationwide the Washington-based National Association of Counties (Naco) said. "Methamphetamine abuse is mainly a rural and suburban problem but it is slowly moving to the cities," Naco research director Jacqueline Byers told the BBC news website.

The findings are based on figures collated from rural and suburban areas and do not include most of the country's largest cities. Half of the counties surveyed said 20% of people in their jails were there because of meth-related crimes.

"Meth abuse is ruining lives and families and filling our jails," said Bill Hansell, president-elect of the association and a commissioner from Umatilla County, Ore., which has led that state in laboratory seizures.
